Gmail has introduced a translation feature for emails directly within the app on iOS and Android phones. This enhancement will indeed make communication more accessible and convenient for its vast user base of over 1.8 billion users worldwide.

The default English language for such a large user base is practical, but it’s a great step forward that Google is now offering native translation integration within the app. This empowers users to translate emails into their preferred languages, catering to a diverse range of linguistic needs.

What Is Gmail Translation Feature?

Google has introduced a new feature in the Gmail mobile app that enables users to translate emails within the app itself. Previously available only on the web, this feature is now being rolled out to both Android and iOS devices, starting today.

In a blog post, Google states, “For years, our users have conveniently translated emails in Gmail on the web to over 100 languages. Starting today, we’re excited to announce a native translation integration within the Gmail mobile app that will enable you to seamlessly communicate in a wide range of languages.”

This feature functions by identifying the language used in the email content and presenting a banner at the top of the email, offering to translate the content into the user’s preferred language. For example, if an email is in German and the user has set their language to English, they can simply tap on “Translate to English” to view the email’s content in the translated language. The purpose of this feature is to make email communication more convenient and accessible for users who speak different languages.

  1. Translate an Email:
When you receive an email in a language different from your set language, follow these steps
Open the email in your Gmail mobile app.
Look for the “Translate” option at the top of the email. It’s usually displayed in a banner or as a clear button.
  2. Managing the Translation Option:
    • If you want to dismiss the translation banner, you have the option to do so.
    • However, Gmail will re-display the translation option if it detects that the content of the email is in a language different from your set language.
  3. Turning Off Translation for a Specific Language:
    • If you receive emails in a particular language that you don’t want to translate again, you can turn off the Translate banner for that language.
    • When you dismiss the banner for an email in a specific language, a prompt may appear asking if you want to “Don’t translate [language] again.”
    • If you choose this option, Gmail will remember not to display the translation banner for emails in that specific language.

When Users Can Use This Feature

On Android devices, the Gmail translation feature will be gradually rolled out starting from August 8, 2023. For iOS users, the feature is expected to become available starting from August 21, 2023.
