On February 6th, 2023, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai officially confirmed that the company would be launching an experimental AI service for conversations, named Bard. It’s an experimental endeavor, with the intention of rivaling the widely popular ChatGPT AI chatbot, backed by Microsoft.

In a blog post, Alphabet’s CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the AI bot service will undergo a phased rollout, starting with a limited group of “trusted testers”, before it becomes accessible to the general public in the near future.

Pichai said in the announcement blog post, “Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses. Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills.

Pichai added, ”Soon, you will see AI-powered features in Search that distil complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest formats, so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the web: whether that’s seeking out additional perspectives, like blogs from people who play both piano and guitar, or going deeper on a related topic, like steps to get started as a beginner”.

What is Bard ?

Bard is powered by Google’s LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), which was developed and introduced in 2021. The initial release of Bard will utilize a “lightweight” version of LaMDA, designed to require less computing resources. As the bot is gradually made available to more users, Google plans to enhance its capabilities with a full-fledged version of LaMDA. As part of its “code red” plan to compete with ChatGPT, the tech giant previously revealed that it was conducting internal experiments with some of its employees. On the other hand, ChatGPT is currently accessible for free testing and has gained 100 million users in a mere two months, showcasing its increasing popularity.

Bard utilizes the Transformer architecture, which was invented by Google Research and made open-source in 2017. Both chatbots are powered by language models based on the Transformer architecture.

Can you access Bard ?

Google Bard is currently restricted to a select group of users for testing. Google is releasing a “lightweight model version of LaMDA”,that requires less computing power.

The post reads, “We’ll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to make sure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information.”

How Bard will be different from ChatGPT ?

ChatGPT is accessible to the general public for free, with a premium version called ChatGPT Plus available for purchase. In contrast, Bard is currently being tested by a limited group of trusted individuals, but is expected to be released to the public in the near future.

LaMDA, Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications, utilizes information from the web to generate its responses, providing it with up-to-date knowledge. ChatGPT, however, is limited to information available up until 2021, this can be an boosting source for bard to be more likely to users.

Bard is a cutting-edge AI offering developed by Google. Whereas, ChatGPT was created by Open AI, a startup AI research firm. Nevertheless, Open AI recently secured a $10 billion investment from Microsoft, the software giant, to integrate ChatGPT into its Bing search engine.

Bard, on the other hand, is an AI language model developed by Google. It is designed specifically for dialogue applications and uses information from the web to generate coherent and informative responses to questions and prompts. Unlike ChatGPT, Bard is more focused on providing relevant information and less on creative or imaginative text generation. Bard Al, on the other hand, is a type of AI technology focused on the creation of original and imaginative content.
