In honor of World Environment Day, Lighthouse Learning, a prominent Early Childhood and K-12 Education Group, unveiled a new campaign as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative dedicated to environmental sustainability. The campaign, titled ‘#DontSkipTheFirstPage,’ aims to challenge the long-standing tradition of leaving the first page of notebooks blank, promoting a small change with significant positive impacts on our planet.

Environmental Impact

The practice of skipping the first page of notebooks has been a generational habit, driven by reasons ranging from superstition to aesthetics. However, the environmental cost of this seemingly innocuous tradition has been largely overlooked. Research reveals that annually, over 312 crore first pages are left blank, affecting approximately 3.12 lakh trees and resulting in 1600 tonnes of carbon emissions. Each page of paper production generates about 5 grams of carbon emissions, exacerbating the environmental challenges we face today.

Call to Action

Driven by a steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship, Lighthouse Learning is urging students, educators, and employees across their network of schools to use the first page of their notebooks, fostering a shift towards sustainability. Through this campaign, Lighthouse Learning seeks to spark a ripple effect, encouraging individuals and institutions nationwide to reevaluate their consumption patterns and embrace more eco-friendly practices.

What do experts have to say about this campaign?

Prajodh Rajan

On the launch of the campaign, Prajodh Rajan, Co-Founder and Group CEO, Lighthouse Learning, said, “The launch of the #DontSkipTheFirstPage campaign this World Environment Day is a call to recognise the profound impact that small, collective actions can have on our planet. It transcends the act of using that first page; it is an invitation to evaluate our habits and adopt a more mindful approach to consumption. We urge everyone to join us in this movement by using all the pages in their notebooks, thereby contributing to the reduction of paper wastage. By collectively embracing this simple change, we can significantly cut carbon emissions and ensure the preservation of our environment for future generations. Let’s together, lead the way to create a more sustainable world.”

Conclusion

As Lighthouse Learning launches its ‘#DontSkipTheFirstPage’ campaign on World Environment Day, it’s not just about challenging a tradition; it’s about recognizing the profound impact of seemingly small actions on our planet. By advocating for the utilization of the first page of notebooks, Lighthouse Learning exemplifies its dedication to environmental responsibility. With a collective effort, individuals and institutions can join this movement towards sustainability, creating a brighter, greener future for generations to come.
